ART BRINGS TO LIGHT WHAT IS INVISIBLE TO OTHERS
Jim is a painter, a painting instructor, and fine woodworker (most recently as a custom guitar maker) with creative work that spans over 40 years.
Born in 1950, his family moved shortly thereafter from Salt Lake City, Utah to Southern California.
His father was an artist and an aerospace engineer, a path Jim was to follow. Involved in art from a young age, his interests always varied between the creative, technical, detailed workmanship.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s, he, like his father, built a career in the aerospace field. He also used those years to seriously pursue painting.
Workshop studies took him from California to New York. His work with contemporary landscapes painters along with his own personal studies of Impressionist-era masters – European and American – fueled his love for the landscape genre in particular.
Since 2000, his ideas about art have been anchored in the landscape, but he has pushed himself to find alternatives to traditional practices of depicting nature as subject.
Jim has been greatly influenced by Monet’s path to Modernism and by Abstract Expressionism. And today he continues to explore his own ideas about visual expression through a variety of materials, compositional methods, and evolving techniques of application.
Jim currently lives and works close to his hometown of Torrance, California.
