CLASSES - 2018

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION

HUNTINGTON BEACH ART CENTER
Located in downtown Huntington Beach, CA, the The Huntington Beach Art Center has established a reputation for presenting artists of national and international prominence as well as the works of emerging artists. In addition to gallery exhibitions and community events, the HBAC offers a wide range of fine art classes for youth and adults taught by professional artists.

OIL PAINTING - INTRODUCTION

This is a beginning oil painting class designed to broaden the student's understanding materials and techniques commonly used in oil painting. The class consists of lecture, demos and hands-on exercises. Students will understand: varieties of available oil paints (qualities and colors); canvas and other types of workable surfaces; brushes and palette knives; plus the different "mediums" such as thinners and paint flow products. Participants will complete a still life painting as well as a landscape painting during the class.

This is a good foundation for my Landscape Painting class.

OIL PAINTING - LANDSCAPE

Beginning to intermediate level landscape oil painting for students with some oil painting experience.  This class is designed to further strengthen and develop the student’s painting abilities using the landscape as subject. Color mixing, relationships of dark and light, composition and perspective are studied as we work from photo assignments. Emphasis is on traditional landscape painting techniques. In addition we will study the work of important historic and contemporary landscape painters, both European and American.

MIXED MEDIA - ART EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY

Explore common materials and discover new processes to use in your artwork. This class is designed to introduce materials and techniques you may not be familiar with, to open up new creative possibilities and loosen up your current painting style. We start with spontaneous "automatic drawing" exercises to free the mind and have fun with the creative process. From there, we build mixed-media projects using graphite, acrylic paints, papers and fabrics. Collage and assemblage, color, shape and design are emphasized. No prior skill needed.

THE ART STUDIO
Located in Westminster, CA, the The Art Studio offers a wide range of classes for all levels and all ages.

Abstract Painting

We study and work in the styles of post-war Abstract Expressionism to contemporary painting methods, focusing on shape, color, mark-making and collage.

PRIVATE LESSONS
STUDIO AND/OR LOCATION PAINTING
In addition to classroom instruction above, I teach a limited number of private classes.  This is a good option for  serious artists of beginning and intermediate levels to learn and/or expand their knowledge of traditional oil painting techniques.  Classes can be structured as either indoor/studio, outdoor plein air sessions, or both.

OIL PAINTING - LANDSCAPE

I gear these classes to the individual student based on his/her experience and goals.
